Marysville district gets contract agreement

Following a marathon meeting, the Marysville School District and the Marysville Education Association reached a tentative three-year agreement on Friday, August 22. The existing contract expires August 31.

Association members were scheduled to vote on the contract at a meeting Tuesday, August 26. The Marysville School Board will consider ratification of the agreement at the September 8 board meeting.

In a written statement, Gail Miller, the district’s assistant superintendent, noted, “Negotiations addressed some challenging issues and were done in the spirit of collaboration and problem solving, resulting in a tentative agreement supported by both bargaining teams.”

Contract negotiations were not so successful in 2003, and teachers in the Marysville School District staged the longest strike in the state’s history that year. The start of the 2003-2004 school year was delayed until October 22 due to the 51-day walkout.

The Marysville Education Association represents approximately 680 school employees.
