Freshman plans a lifetime of music

by Beckye Randall

Hannah RossLakewood High School freshman Hannah Ross is a poised, self-confident teen who is serious about music and about her favorite instrument, the bassoon.

“I know, without a doubt, that I will always have music in my life,” said Hannah. “I hope to play with a symphony or maybe be a soloist.”

In her first year of high school, Hannah has already racked up some impressive accomplishments. In early February she competed in the Mt. Pilchuck Solo and Ensemble Contest, winning the division on bassoon. The first-place finish earned her a spot in the State Solo Contest, which is held April 26 at Central Washington University in Ellensburg. She will perform Vivaldi’s Bassoon Concerto in A Minor at the state competition.

The student’s love of music began at an early age with five years of piano lessons. In middle school Hannah played flute, but at band camp she was given the opportunity to try the bassoon. She was immediately hooked.

Hannah and her bassoon, which she has named “Gary,” spend a lot of time together.

“I practice at least an hour every day,” said Hannah, “but some days it’s a lot more than that.”

A member of the Everett Youth Symphony, Hannah practices with the prestigious community orchestra for more than 3 hours each Monday. On weekends she travels to Blaine for private lessons with Martin Kuuskmann, a highly-regarded bassoonist and Grammy nominee.

But while music is a big part of Hannah’s life, it’s not her only passion.

“I love drama, choir, drawing and painting,” said the young student. “Anything creative, that’s what I enjoy.”

She also takes tennis lessons, and is looking forward to being a member of the school’s tennis team this spring.

Hannah’s other focus is on “bringing people together.” The inspiring young woman explained, “We all have things in common with every other person. We just need to find things to bring us together.”

Looking ahead to her college career, Hannah’s choice is clear. “I want to attend the Manhattan School of Music,” she said. The school is Kuuskmann’s alma mater, which may explain Hannah’s determination.

For the near future her goal is to improve her musical abilities “by leaps and bounds.” With her combination of determination, talent and confidence she should be leaping and bounding all the way to the state championship.
