Totem student walkout

Editor,

Totem Middle School has a history of problems with violence, whether it is alcohol, drugs or bullying. I am very proud of the students for taking a stand in protest against the violence in this school. To effect change sometimes we have to stand up for what we feel is right. These students are heroes in my eyes. I am proud of them for saying okay if we walkout and the school says we have to be disciplined to make change; we are willing to accept it willingly.

My son attended Totem Middle School when it was Marysville Junior HS. It was a nightmare for him. The bullying he incurred from the students was undeniably uncalled for. My son has ADHD and Asperger's Syndrome, which makes him easy prey for the bullies. He lives with the effects of it every day of his life.

I was scared to see my son transfer from Marysville Junior HS, now Totem Middle School, to Marysville-Pilchuck HS. But, I have to tell you we had a much better managed school with a much higher population, and although MPHS has its problems, his schooling years there were by far better than they were at MJHS, now Totem Middle School. He had his problems there, but nothing compared to what he went through when he was in MJHS.

If my son had stayed at this school, he probably would have ended up dropping out of school, but as luck would have it, he is a Class of 2007 high school graduate. Thank you MPHS!

These students want to see Totem Middle School made a better place to learn in. Is that so bad? Okay, Totem Middle School administration, now that your students have spoken, listen openly to your student population that wants to see CHANGE happen.

Discipline these students if you must, but they are heroes in my eyes!  EVERY ONE OF THEM! Work together to effect change!
