Tulalip TV broadcasts live video worldwide
On Tuesday, February 12, Tulalip’s KANU-TV made history by becoming the nation’s first Native American station to broadcast live worldwide via the Internet.
Currently shown on cable channel 99, KANU-TV’s 24-hour programming is now available through real-time video streaming at www.kanutv.com. High-resolution broadcasting allows full-screen viewing and audio on computer monitors and laptops with high-speed Internet connections.
“This is a tremendous educational and informative channel for tribal members who either live off Tulalip Reservation or do not receive KANU’s cable broadcast,” said Shelly Lacy, general manager for Tulalip Tribes. “With this technological advance, tribal members in Mexico, Canada, Puerto Rico, Iraq and around the world can watch important programming on issues affecting all of Indian Country.”
Native American Television, headquartered in Washington, D.C., views the technology milestone as the first step in establishing a nationwide multimedia network.
“Just as they have done in sponsoring Northwest Indian News, Tulalip is once again on the leading edge,” said NATV Washington News Bureau Chief Randy Flood. “We are proud to be affiliated with them.”
KANU-TV offers programming that includes general manager reports, Tulalip Resort information, a series focusing on Tulalip history and culture, the Lushootseed Language series, broadcasts of Tulalip Heritage Hawks basketball games and other information of interest to Native Americans.
