What started as a Facebook group evolved into a real-world network meeting at the Historic Everett Theatre on August 4.

A newly-formed nonprofit arts education organization, Red Curtain Foundation for the Arts, hosted the Facebook page and its president, Scott Randall, vowed that if the page attracted 100 members he'd organize a meet-and-greet. That threshold was reached in early July and the online group now has nearly 140 members.

"It was great to be able to provide an opportunity for actors, painters, poets, musicians and photographers to meet in a casual setting to trade ideas and promote their activities," said Randall. "Artists in Snohomish County can help one another be more successful just by being more aware of what's going on. Even sharing performance calendars is a great start."

Wendy Becker, Snohomish County's cultural development director, addressed the gathering to talk about the county's role in supporting the arts.

"We'll help you pay to publicize your events outside the county," said Becker, referring to hotel/motel tax grants. She also mentioned display opportunities for sculptors and visual artists, and offered the county's online event calendar for additional marketing support.

"I think this is a fabulous idea," said Joy Bezanis, a local artist who organized a visual display on stage during the event. "If we [artists] can work together, everyone will benefit."

The Facebook page can serve as a clearinghouse to post gallery events, performance dates, concerts and more. To find out more about the group, visit facebook.com and search for Snohomish County Artists.
