Brianna Jason has been a fan of musical theater for years, thanks to her mother's penchant for renting musicals on DVD. But when her older sister Lexi was cast in the
Northwest Savoyards' production of "Once Upon a Mattress" last year, Brianna was hooked on live performances.
Now Brianna gets a chance to be part of a full-scale professional musical production at
Seattle's 5th Avenue Theatre as part of the kids' choir in "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," running October 10 through November 1.
"This is my first show and I'm having so much fun," said Brianna. "It's really fun working with all the people at 5th Avenue because everyone is so nice."
A homeschooled 4th grader, Brianna has been involved with her church choir and she competed, with friend Leanna Totten, in the Strawberry Festival's talent show last summer. The two sang "For Good" from the musical "Wicked" and they won second place.
The 52 children who make up the kids' choir for the show range in age from 8 to 14, and they were chosen from a series of auditions.
"They're incredibly focused, they're quick, and they're giving 100 percent of their energy," said the show's musical director Ian Eisendrath. "While they're a choir, we're really asking them to be actors, and that's all about individual personality."
Brianna has also auditioned for the part of Suzy in the 5th Avenue's production of "White Christmas." She was called back for a second audition, but hadn't heard the outcome as of press time.
"Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" stars Anthony Fedorov, who was a finalist on TV's "American Idol." The classic Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice musical retells the Biblical story of Joseph, the young man with 11 troublesome brothers and a particularly splendid coat.
Tickets for "Joseph" are available by phone at (206) 625-1900, in person at the box office at 1308-5th Avenue in Seattle, or online at
