The Rat King

With spectacular hand-painted backdrops and life-sized dancing puppets, the Moscow Ballet's version of "The Great Russian Nutcracker" promises a unique holiday experience for the local community.

The ballet classic, accompanied by the Everett Symphony Orchestra performing Tchaikovsky's stirring score, will be presented for two shows, at 4 and 7:30 p.m., November 22 at the Everett Civic Auditorium, 2415 Colby Avenue in Everett.

"The Great Russian Nutcracker" features top-notch Russian dancers Ekaterina Bortykova and Akzhol Mussakhanov. Ron Friesen will conduct the Everett Symphony, the 14th time the orchestra will perform the dazzling music.

"The Russian version of the ballet is a visual tapestry rich in detail and whimsy," said Roger Pawley, spokesperson for the Everett Symphony.

The performance is especially distinctive for its unique setting of Act II in the "Land of Peace and Harmony" and for the introduction of a new character, a Christmas Dove. The production also introduces a fantasy clock with wings of an owl that cast a shadow over the battle between the Soldiers and the Mice.

Several local dancers from the Dance School in Everett will perform alongside the Russian troupe.

Tickets to the holiday classic are available at www.everettsymphony.org or by calling 1-800-595-4849. Groups of 10 or more can qualify for discounted prices; call (425) 258-1605, ext. 801, for information.
