Three Arlington students and nine from Marysville schools have been recognized for their artistic achievements by the Arts Council of Snohomish County on behalf of the nationwide Scholastic Art Awards program, winning Gold Key Awards in the regional competition.

Works by Marysville students Javier Herrera and Kevin Dao were among five chosen to receive the regional American Vision Awards, a "best of show" designation. Both young artists entered original drawings.

Students' submissions fit into various additional categories including Digital Art, Printmaking, Painting and Ceramics.

Nancy Bell, the council's education coordinator, said, "The objective [of the Scholastic Art Awards] is to foster the confidence of young artists and give them the opportunity to be recognized for their creative achievements by the world at large."

Kevin Dao, a senior at M-PHS, received Gold Key awards for two of his works. "Unresolved" was the American Vision selection, and another drawing, "Graffiti Unknown," also advances to national competition.

M-PHS senior Javier Herrera won an American Vision award for his evocative drawing entitled "Despair." Javier also earned a Gold Key award in 2009.

"Frantic Adoration" and "In His Own World," Rachel Wheeler's energetic and colorful drawings, were selected for Gold Keys this year. She has won Gold and Silver Key awards the past two years.

Entries into the regional Scholastic Art Award competition were judged on originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal vision or voice. Gold Key and American Vision winners will advance to national adjudication in New York City. Many students also were honored with Silver Key awards and honorable mentions.

All the student artists and their families were invited to attend a celebration ceremony at the Everett Civic Auditorium on February 22. The works are on display at the Arts Council gallery at the Historic Monte Cristo Hotel, 1507 Wall Street in Everett, through March 1.
