The Northwest Savoyards was founded to showcase works by the British operetta masters Gilbert and Sullivan, and the company returns to those musical roots with its upcoming production of "The Mikado, or the Town of Titipu." The production, featuring local singers and musicians, runs March 5 through 21 at the Historic Everett Theatre.

The Savoyards have been successful in attracting high-caliber talent for past productions, and "The Mikado" is no exception. Experienced performers from the Seattle Gilbert & Sullivan Society and Second Story Rep join the cast of locals to bring the musical comedy to the stage. Lisa Thiroux, a Savoyards veteran, directs the action.

Members of the Everett Symphony Orchestra make up the show's 13-piece orchestra under the direction of Josh Zimmerman.

"The Mikado" is one of the most popular Gilbert & Sullivan operettas. The story unfolds in typical G&S fashion: Nanki-Poo, the son of the Emperor of Japan, runs away from home to avoid an arranged marriage. He goes to the town of Titipu, where his true love, Yum-Yum, lives. Unfortunately she is betrothed to Ko-Ko, the Lord High Executioner (who was sentenced to death for flirting, but reprieved at the last moment and given the post). So begins a hilarious satire of the British social system, interpreted in a traditional Japanese setting, of love, betrayal, executions, broken marriages and mistaken identities.

The cast includes Derek Sellers as Nanki-Poo, Georgia Hill as Yum-Yum, Dave Holden as Ko-Ko and Craig Cantler as Pooh-Bah. The Mikado is played by Mark Abel.

Performances for "The Mikado" are Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $22 for adults and $19 for seniors, students and military personnel. Tickets are available at the Everett Theatre's box office at 2911 Colby Avenue, by calling (425) 258-6766 or online at www.everetttheatre.org.
