In the early 1950s, pop music was filled with crooners like Pat Boone, Frank Sinatra and Doris Day. A few country singers began experimenting with driving beats and more modern lyrics, taking some cues from R&B music, and invented a whole new genre that was known as rockabilly.

Early pioneers of the music that became rock 'n roll included Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Conway Twitty, Patsy Cline and Brenda Lee, and their mecca was the Sun Records studio in Memphis, Tennessee.
