The 17-mile Centennial Trail in Arlington is the focus of a public art project managed by the Snohomish County Arts Commission, which is seeking concept submissions to design and integrate artwork along the popular trail destination.

The commission envisions an arch or arches in one or more locations along the northern portion of the trail. The arches could act as gateways, directional markers, or simply a pleasant surprise along the path.

The arch or arches must be wide enough for vehicle traffic (15 feet) and the overall height clearance must be at least 17 feet to accommodate a horse and rider.

The $39,000 budget must cover all costs associated with the project including design fees, consultants' fees, permits, taxes, insurance, materials and installation.

Basic concepts are due to the council by September 27. A five-member panel will review the submissions and select up to three finalists who will further develop their preliminary conceptual proposal and interview with the panel. Artist selection is planned to be complete by January 21, 2011.

The initial submission must include the artist's resume, a written explanation of the concept, up to ten digital images on CD of relevant work along with an annotated list identifying the images and media, and a self-addressed stamped envelope for return of the CD.
