The inaugural season of the
Everett Philharmonic, led by conductor Dr. Paul-Elliott Cobbs, kicks off Sunday, Sept. 26, at Everett's Civic Auditorium.
The opening program, entitled "Ignite the Season," features classical music by Richard Wagner, Rachmaninoff and Stravinsky.
Famed international pianist John Pickett joins the local musicians for Rachmaninoff's "Second Piano Concerto."
In a nod to local tradition, Dr. Cobbs hosts an informal and informative "Stageside Chat" at 6 p.m. in the auditorium, familiarizing the audience with insights and anecdotes connected with the evening's composers and their works.
The Everett Philharmonic was founded earlier this year, after the cancellation of the remainder of the Everett Symphony Orchestra's season and the termination of Cobbs' directing contract. The organization has grown to 85 professional-level musicians.
"We haven't lost a beat," said timpanist A. Todd Parks. "We're right on schedule."
Associate concertmaster Patrice Weed Shearer added, "We were approached by community music lovers, when they heard of [the Symphony's] cancellations, with moans and tears. Now they can dry their eyes."
The Everett Philharmonic Orchestra's season will continue with performances in November, February, April and May. Visit the
EPO website, or call (206) 270-9729 for tickets, which are $25 for adults and $20 for students and seniors.
