Have you bought your umbrella yet?

The deadline for delivering your hand-crafted umbrella design to the Marysville Parks Department, for installation on light poles along State Avenue and Third Street, has been extended to April 16.

The Marysville Arts Coalition is selling umbrella-shaped plywood cutouts for $30, which can then be decorated to represent your family, business, or service organization. While the most popular decorative element is paint, some umbrellas also feature three-dimensional objects (carefully attached).

For an additional $30, art students at the School for the Entrepreneur at Getchell High School will complete the decoration for you. Kayla Stevens, Meagan Diemert and Amanda Tabler have already completed four umbrellas for customers.

Like the other students, junior Amanda Tabler was eager to participate in the project, explained teacher Kurt Hollstein, who is also a member of the Marysville Arts Coalition.

"This was a great opportunity for the students to get some hands-on, real-world experience working for a customer," said Hollstein.

Amanda, who created umbrella designs for Elegant Nails Design and Leifer Manor, hopes to pursue a career in the arts with further education at Cornish or the Art Institute after high school. Her passion is for animé style art, and her dream job would be doing character design for video games. Example of her artwork are on display at Ornamental Arts Gallery, 13805 Pacific Hwy. #105 in Marysville.

The plywood umbrellas are available for pickup at Carr's Hardware on Third Street in downtown Marysville, E&E Lumber, at 1364 State Ave., and North County Outlook, 1331 State Ave. #B.

Like the wreaths that were installed during the Christmas holiday, proceeds from the umbrella sales will be used to further opportunities to enjoy and participate in the arts in Marysville.

In fact, one of those opportunities is coming up later this month. On Thursday, April 26, the Marysville Arts Coalition will host its first special event. Also using the umbrella theme, "It's Raining Art" will showcase the works of local artists working in various media. Representatives of a craft brewery, winery and distillery will be on hand to provide tastes of their unique local products, while local musicians will provide ambience.

"It's Raining Art" will be held at the former Oroweat bakery outlet store, 1347 State Avenue in Marysville, from 2 to 8 p.m. There is no cost for admission and free appetizers will be provided. Taste tickets will be available for $2 each, and full bottles of wine, beer and vodka can be purchased for at-home enjoyment. And, of course, there's a good chance you'll find a piece of artwork you just can't pass up.

The Marysville Arts Coalition is a diverse grassroots community organization providing the leading voice for arts and culture in Marysville. Meetings and membership are open to the public. For more information, visit www.facebook.com/MarysvilleArts.
