Concert band performs homeless benefit at BPAC

A fundraiser for the homeless of Arlington, the North Cascades Concert Band (NCCB) will present its spring concert at the Byrnes Performing Arts Center in Arlington, co-sponsored by the Arlington Rotary Club, Arlington Arts Council and Hands Together.
The 50-piece wind band is directed by Lylburn Layer with assistance from Rob Patterman.
Members of the band come from across the Puget Sound region, from Burien to Blaine. Band members from Arlington include Scott Campbell, Paul Graves, Devon McColley-Hopkins, Warren Hopkins, Alan Lish, Jeannine Lish, Rob Pattermann, Bev Soler and Patrick Swesey. Marysville residents Al Baker, Miriam Greenshields, Elly Moen, Jay Price, Mike Schafer, and Lorrie Winchell also perform with the band, and members from Stanwood and Camano Island are Marcia Boffey, Bob Harper and Christina Neugebauer.
A spring tradition of the NCCB, "Sousa and His Band" salutes the famous early 20th century band conductor John Philip Sousa. The popularity of the Sousa Band came at a time when few symphony orchestras existed in the U.S. From the Civil War until the 1920s, bands, not orchestras, provided music for community events.
The program includes music for all tastes by traditional and contemporary composers performed by outstanding soloists.
Especially unique is a recent composition by NCCB member John Rantschler, and a performance of "Canticles," a major new composition for bass trombone and wind orchestra by contemporary Dutch composer Johan de Meij, which will be performed by the band's outstanding bass trombonist John Boblett.
Another concert highlight is a recent composition based on the famous Ernest Thayer 1888 poem "Casey at the Bat" with narration by band member Warren Hopkins.
Encores of famous Sousa marches complement the program.
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 27, at at the Linda M. Byrnes Performing Arts Center, 18821 Crown Ridge Boulevard, at Arlington High School.
