Coastal Forks a moody setting for vampire story
by Mary Burns
By Stephenie Meyer
(Megan Tingley Books, $10.99)
Bella loves her quirky mother and wants her to be happy with her new boyfriend without the encumbrance of a daughter. So Bella moves from sunny Arizona to rainy Forks, Washington, where her dad lives alone in their old house, absorbed in his role as chief of police.
We are soon drawn into the routine of this simple town and its ordinary high school, along with Bella’s infatuation with senior Edward Cullen. In time, she learns that her new life is bound by myth. Through hints of comportment and the retelling of an Indian legend, we learn that the dreary, overcast weather makes Forks an ideal locale for vampires.
This charming romance for young adults is the first of four in the “Twilight Saga” with the final book, “Breaking Dawn,” appearing at 12:01 a.m. on August 2. Read “Twilight” now for your introduction to these teens and Bella’s new friends, and to decide if you ever want to visit Forks when it’s raining. You’ll be thirsty for more.
