Chorus members delivery laughs

If you’re in the mood for tongue-in-cheek grownup entertainment, the Evergreen Coffee House has just the ticket when ensemble groups Captain Smartypants and Sensible Shoes come to town on Saturday, October 11 at 8 p.m.

The local venue presents unique entertainment several times a year sponsored by the Evergreen Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, located at 1607 Fourth Street in Marysville.

Captain Smartypants and Sensible Shoes are offshoots of the Seattle Men’s Chorus and Seattle Women’s Chorus. The smaller groups each feature the vocal talents of nine members from the full chorales.

The two main bodies, both operating under the umbrella of Flying House Productions, are the largest community choruses in America. Seattle Men’s Chorus is the largest gay men’s chorus with over 300 members, while Seattle Women’s Chorus has a membership of over 200.

Captain Smartypants is billed as a vocal comedy group, and artistic director Eric Lane Barnes’ previous shows “Trousers of Terror” and “PowerPants!” have played to sellout houses in Seattle and beyond. The ensemble’s newest production is entitled “Cirque du Slaque.”

Sensible Shoes, an ensemble of Seattle Women's Chorus, is a pop and vocal jazz group that balances great vocal delivery with fun and innovative staging.

The October performance marks the third performance by Captain Smartypants at the Evergreen UU coffee house, according to publicity chair Kathy Craven.

“They can do more crazy, outrageous things than the full chorus,” said Craven.

“While it’s a fun and entertaining show, it is definitely intended for adults,” Craven cautioned. “Because of the name, some parents get them confused with Spongebob Squarepants, which can be somewhat embarrassing. Their humor is always good-natured, but probably not appropriate for youngsters.”

The performance is free, with a suggested donation of $12. For additional information about the Captain Smartypants and Sensible Shoes event, phone (360) 659-6621.

Other performances slated for the local coffee house include Real Folk, a local trio of musicians, and the popular Poetry Slam. For more information, visit www.evergreenuu.org.
