Teacher Miranda Anderson works with elementary students during the Summer Fun STEM camp.

Arlington Public Schools held the Summer Fun camp at Kent Prairie Elementary June 21-24 which focused on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) for English Language (EL) students in the district. Nearly 90 EL students attended the camp.

“The camp focuses on high level vocabulary along with STEM activities,” said Kent Prairie Principal Colleen Van Belle. “By having smaller groups, they’re able to work a lot with other students on activities.”

Classes included activities with dinosaurs, bats, and space. There was even a virtual reality session where students could experience swimming through the water.

“The best part of the camp was the virtual reality session,” said Ivan Pantoja, who just finished third grade at Pioneer Elementary. “It’s like I was a scuba diver swimming in the ocean!”

This is the second year the district has held the STEM camp for EL students. The camp was paid for through an Office of System and School Improvement grant from the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.
