City Council asks Legislature to clarify law enforcement reform

Cites ‘uncertainty in response,’ potential threat to public safety

The Marysville City Council has adopted a resolution asking the state Legislature to clarify its intent related to a number of law enforcement-related bills passed in the most recent legislative session. Council unanimously approved the measure at its Work Session on Monday, Oct. 4.

The resolution states in part, “Appropriate use of force is a critical component of officers being able to do their jobs, to prevent and solve crimes, and to maintain public order.”

“I am proud of the Marysville City Council in unanimously passing this resolution which affirms our commitment to public safety and ensures the protection of our citizens,” said Council President Kamille Norton, who introduced the resolution. “The City Council supports our law enforcement officers who bravely and honorably serve our community.”

City Councilmember Jeff Vaughan added, “I’ve been concerned about the potential negative impact of the police reform bills our Legislature passed this year. In consultation with our police chief and city attorney, our Council brought forward a resolution encouraging our state legislators to address our concerns.

“We are hopeful that our representatives in Olympia will consider our concerns and make the necessary adjustments to support our police in the important work they do to keep our communities safe.”

Police Chief Erik Scairpon told the Council that clarification by the Legislature would help “remove ambiguities and conflicts of law for the safety of our city and communities throughout the state.”
