Thanks to a victory Feb. 19 against Cascade, Arlington earned third place in the District 1, 3A tournament and headed to a play-in game for regionals.
The Eagles beat Cascade 70-54 in the game at Everett Community College.
“We came out slow and they came out fast. They’re really well coached,” said Arlington basketball coach Nick Brown. It took about two quarters for the Eagles to get going and when they did, the team performed well, Brown added.
Scoring in the first quarter was close. The quarter ended with the Eagles up by one point, 10-9. Arlington started building on their lead during the second quarter where four players scored. By the end of the first half, Arlington was leading 31-21.
Brown said that Arlington scored only one three-pointer during the game.
After not scoring in the first quarter, senior guard Ethan Martin went on to scored 32 points. “He’s a special kid,” Brown said.
In addition, Junior David Zachman scored 12 points and Gage Price scored 11 points.
Halftime saw Arlington up by 10 points leading 31-21.
Brown complimented the leadership skills of the team’s three captains, Martin, Luke Brown and Grayson Falk, who were calm, cool and collected during the game.
The third quarter saw the Eagles extend their lead to 12 points. Martin scored 12 points during the quarter. Cascade pulled within nine points around the midpoint of the fourth quarter; however, Arlington extended its lead thanks to several free throws late in the game.
After defeating Shorecrest, 70-57, Feb. 12, the Eagles lost Feb. 16 to eventual district champion Mountlake Terrace 51-46 at a game held at Everett Community College.
“They were just the better team that night,” Brown said as he complimented Mountlake Terrace’s head coach.
Arlington has a play-in game to advance to regionals. They faced Evergreen of Vancouver, Feb. 22, after the North County Outlook went to press.
